20 years in the making.

Elixir opened on 14th February 2006, "who opens a cafe on Valentines day?" Lara Toyne said. There was a simple idea that was quietly bold for its time: a true kiwiana cafe built on organic and locally sourced ingredients, done properly, with service that felt like community.

From the beginning, Elixir wasn't trying to be everything to everyone - it was trying to be the same, great experience every single time. That stubborn commitment to consistency became the secret sauce: food, coffee and service you could count on.

In those early years, Elixir was unlike anywhere else in New Plymouth. There was table service during the day (that was never a thing!) The menu was big, generous and a little bit brave - classic kiwi comfort with fresh ideas. A lot was made on site. Ingredients were treated with respect, coffee was and is taken seriously - so seriously you  didn't get near the coffee machine until you'd proved yourself.

And then there are the flavours that take you right back..

Mince on toast, the chocolate chunk gluten free brownie, the New York baked cheesecake - all on the menu since day one. The iced chocolates with the giant chocolate fish, the kind of dishes you eat, you remember. The buzz of WOMAD and the Tattoo Festival, the once-a-year regulars who walk back in like they never left. The 'same table' crew, the coffee orders known by heart - and suddenly Elixir isn't just a cafe, its a part of people lives.

That's why the next chapter made sense.

The next chapter

In 2017 Elixir was purchased by Sue Katene, someone who'd managed Elixir in the early days and knew the standards were not negotiable. Her approach was simple: if it's not broke, don't fix it. Protect what made Elixir - Elixir. The coffee, the food, the service and to build something even stronger behind the scenes: a culture where hospitality is a profession, people feel supported and the workplace feels like whānau.

Still Growing...

Since then the Elixir Story has kept growing. 2019 Elixir West Cafe and Catering was born. The heart stayed the same: genuine hospitality, high standards and a team that cares.

Over 20 years there have been highs and lows and plenty of sleepless nights. There were seasons where Elixir had to educate people because it was a little ahead of its time. There were tough winters, rising costs and ofcourse COVID-19 which tested hospitality everywhere. But Elixir didn't back down. We adapted, worked harder, held standards, and kept showing up for it's people and it's community.

Along the way Elixir has been proud to receive awards, nominations, and local recognition - but the real reason it's still here is simpler than that.

Its the community who made Elixir their place.

The staff who brought the standard to life.

The regulars who became like whānau.

The kids who grew up and came back.

20years in and Elixir is still doing what it set out to do: Be your daily fix.

To everyone who's been apart of the story since 2006 - THANKYOU!
